Ground anchors are an effective way to overcome uplift forces generated by hydrostatic pressure, seismic activity or overturning moments. Grouting Services latest tension anchor project for Kalmar Construction Limited utilises permanent multi-strand ground anchors to hold down a new apartment building in Onehunga.
Grouting Services engaged partner Neil Jacka of Total Ground Engineering to complete the design, documentation and construction monitoring. A total of 48No ground anchors were required comprising 3-12x15.2mm strands. The local ground conditions included multiple layers of basalt of variable depth, often separated by layers of volcanic ash. A ground model was developed to detail a schedule of anchors specifying the bond zone which may comprise either continuous basalt or an aggregated sum of basalt thickness over several layers.
EDGE Consulting Engineers undertook the peer review. The site team is doing a fantastic job navigating the varying ground conditions and challenges that volcanic material presents.
