Waterview Connection

Services: Ground Anchors

Main Contractor: The Well-Connected Alliance

Engineer: BECA

The Waterview Connection is the last segment of Auckland's south-western motorway and the final key link for the 48km Western Ring Route which will provide an alternative to the Southern and Northern motorways (SH1), bypassing central transport corridors.

Grouting Services was responsible for the supply and installation of 416No double corrosion protected strand anchors for the retention of the motorway walls anchored into the underlying East Coast Bays Formation. In addition, 32No double corrosion protected anchors were installed into the localised basalt rock to restrain the tunnel boring machine gantry. 126No soil nails and a number of drainage relief holes were also completed as part of the motorway on ramp retention works. All anchors and soil nails were constructed to achieve a 100year design life. Drilling techniques included conventional rotary wash drilling and rotary percussive drilling with hole diameters ranging from 100mm to 200mm. Anchor lengths ranged from 17m to 35m

Demanding programme requirements dictated the use of multiple drilling rigs and crews, and, required that the anchoring works proceeded in tandem with numerous other activities which required a high level of co-ordination and project management of multi-disciplinary teams. Individual anchors were coiled up on a carousel and installed using our specialist anchoring installation unit in-lieu of traditional craneage techniques which provided significant benefits to the project.
